Fail Part 2!

I mentioned awhile back that I had finished a painting for and auction that I'm very excited to be a part of, but that it just didn't come out the way I'd hoped. Actually it was a complete failure. Well I decided to dust myself off and find a little time to try an entirely different take on the painting, this time using a technique closer to my comfort zone and well, I failed again!

This one is much better, but still not good enough.

I tell you it's one thing to try again, but trying a third time takes some doing, It's really frustrating to fail twice at something that takes so much time and effort to do, but I'm glad to say that after this painting I took one last shot at it and that third painting was a success! Unfortunately I can't post that one until after the auction this summer, but I'm very happy with it and I'll be sure to post it as soon as I can. Third times a charm!

Dan's Fake New Yorker Caption Contest

Times up! First off I just want to encourage each and everyone of you that entered my fake New Yorker caption contest to enter the real New Yorker caption contest(not that I want the competition). You all did an amazing job coming up with very funny captions to a drawing that had no original joke in mind when it was drawn. And now the moment we've all been waiting for, the two runners up in the first Dan's fake caption contest are...

"Bad dog! This is why we can't have nice torture dungeons."

Submitted by Chuck

"Well... at least now we can be alone."

Submitted by Doug Cox

And the winner is...

"What girl? -- Timmy fell in the threshing machine?!"

Submitted by Starchie Spudnoggen

This was so much fun I plan on doing it again every so often in the future!

Thanks for playing!

Dan

This Week's New Yorker Caption Contest

Here is my entry in this weeks New Yorker Caption Contest. Each week they provide the image and you provide the caption.

"Which one promised you awesome guitar soloing skills?"

Here are some left overs I didn't use.

Don’t worry they can’t see you, you’re thinking of Santa Claus.

Which one made you feel guilty about the way you live your life?

Do you recognize the one that robbed you of your youth?

Which one of them looks like the guy that stabbed you with a pitchfork?

Would you like to see more options?

Which one of them stole your leather jacket and pitchfork?

Number one, could you please step forward and say, “I’m the one and only true God, now give me you atm number.”

Which one promised you meaning?

Which one did you see challenging your son to a guitar solo contest for his eternal soul?

Number one, please step forward and say, “you’re a bad person for masturbating."

* UPDATE - I'm going to be out of town this Tuesday, so that means the polls are closing on Sunday night instead of Tuesday. I will be voting on the winner and two runners up this Sunday night, and posting it one Tuesday Morning. So for the next few days there is still time to win nothing more or less than my undying respect!

This Week's New Yorker Caption Contest

This weeks entry in the New Yorker Caption Contest, is coming live from New York! I'm in New York this week with Michele celebrating our third wedding anniversary. Remember, each week they provide the image and you provide the caption. Here's what I entered this week, with a few extras below.

"Your resume is unexpectedly detailed."

Can I get you something to eat.

I think this job will really help build character.

My kids are big fans of yours, their constantly drawing pictures of you.

You resume is very impressive, and the self-portrait you’ve included is shockingly realistic.

At this company we’ll give you enough rope to hang your self with.

At this company if you put in the work, and really hustle in a years time you could move up to middle management with a corner office, a secretary and eventually some shoulders and a nose.

This Week's New Yorker Caption Contest

Here is my entry in this weeks New Yorker Caption Contest. Each week they provide the image and you provide the caption.

"I got home early to find Carol in bed, dressed in lingerie, with the window open and for a minute I almost thought I’d caught her cheating on me."

Got in late from Michigan tonight. Only had time to write a couple.

The new apartment is perfect, and the monsters that terrorize this side of town are way smaller than they were up town.

You’re right, it is too nice out to have the air conditioning on. I’ll open a window.

…now look to the right of that building, and you’ll see two brick condos, mine is the one on the left. Now look for the giant naked, bald, screaming monster hanging off the side next to the window with the light on. Do you see me now?

Fail!

Last week I found myself with an unexpected Friday off! I spent the day painting a picture for an auction I'm extremely excited to be participating in. Here's the line drawing with a wash from early in the day.It was wonderful spending this free day off, enjoying some unseasonably warm weather, listening to Drew and Mike and working on this painting, and when the day was done, I realizing, I had totally...FAILED!

The painting did not come out the way I'd hoped. It's not that it was awful, it's just that it came out amateurish, badly drawn, and with all my fear of color totally conformed. All that being said, later that night, I came up with a much better idea that is more in my safety range.
Sometimes you think you're doing good, and you just plain fail, and I think that's okay. You just have to regroup, and try something else. I wanted to share my failure in hopes it would at least inspire somebody out there to muster the effort to try again! I'll let you know how the new version comes out as soon as I can. Hopefully it won't suck, but if it does, maybe I'll try a third time.
